Rant about Still Life Drawing

Sat May 16, 2009, 8:40 PM
  • Mood: Unhappy
  • Listening to: "The World" from .Hack//
  • Reading: PC Gamer
  • Watching: Going to watch W.I.T.C.H. on Youtube in a bit
  • Playing: Been playing Free Realms lately. Surprisinly good
  • Drinking: Water
Ok, as you all know (and by "you all" I mean the three people that actuially read this Journal), I amd being more or less required to do more "fine art" as opposed to the usuial anime stuff. By Fine Art I mean Still Life drawings (ZOMG FRUIT INA BOWL!!1!) and Figure Studies (Drawin' nekkid peoples). Now, Figure studies I have no issue with. Helps me with anatomy and whatnot.

Still Life is another story.

I hate hate HATE it. If it were a person I would kill them with fire, dance on their smoldering corpse, then piss and deficate on them before running them over with a steam roller.

So, now that that is over with, here's WHY I hate still life.

1. No creativity. Oh sure, you can be creative with what you use to draw it with and what you draw, but other than that, you're more or less taking a picture of something with pencil and paper. Grab a camera, it's quicker.
2. Mind numbing. This is just a IMO. I can't hardly begin to start drawing something just sitting in front of me unless I'm going to do more with it. Like that raccoon pic I put up a while back. I drew that skull from one that I have here in my room, then I added shit. THAT is what I can do without wanting to kill myself. Leaving it unmodified, not so much.
3. Painful. Now, when I'm drawing something from my head, I don't really worry about perfection. So the anatomy is a little off, so the shading isn't quite right, big whoop. With Still Life, everything I draw has to be PERFECT or it's a POS. Oh, the shading isn't right. *Scraps* Oh, the texture and the folds on taht piece of cloth are off. *Starts over*

So yeah, that's my rant and stuff.

So now, about what I've been drawing, as I've been trying to draw every day. I'm in a bit of a fantasy slump at the moment. Since the Elf pic, I've drawn two almost full fantasy pics (One of the OEB from WoW and another of Cthulhu) and a handful of sketches (and a bad Drill Sarge pic). Showed them to my brother, and here's more or less what he said.

"It's good, but you need to stop drawing fantasy shit."

Something like that. Truthfully I was a bit....hurt. Unless someone asks me to draw something specific, I draw what I want because I want to draw it. And then, I wanted to draw fantasy stuff, and my brother more or less called it shit. Though he did try to reword it shortly after when i gave him an annoyed scowl =P

But yeah, must force myself to draw still life to appease College people and parents....

Fuuuuuuck........

FYI, drawing a still life isn't about drawing something in a creative manner. Yes, it's mind-numbing, but it builds MAJOR technical skills. Without learning how to draw something like that (as in, an object right in front of you) correctly, you can't be expected to accurately depict an object from your imagination, for example. Trust me on this one. It sucks, but it's worth it. I'm an art student who hated still life drawing. :P

You can also be creative with composition, and the way you technechly render it

u can have lots of lines, or make it smudgy, the amount of contrast, materials

JUST DO IT ALREADY!

I did them every week, twice a week for 5 hours straight for a semester, and I have to do them again at the beginning of next semester, just do it, it will make your art better.

And yes, you can't just draw fantasy, and if you do you should make up more characters that are more original, like monsters that are not from fairy tales, and elves.. or most things with pointed ears are frowned upon in art communities, same with dragons.

Try drawing silly animals, or combining animals to make cooler animals. And when I say this, I mean try to do their anatomy and shade them. Also creating environments for your characters are good.

Do some landscapes too, they will want to see a balanced portfolio, balanced usually includes a landscape and possibly and interior along with still life. And maybe try a self portrait.. god I hate those. Try a variety of medium for drawing too, even if you don't want to have colored pieces you can use charcoal, conte crayon, pen, india ink, acrylics even, college, mixed media

very your line weight in your drawings, try different means of shading, such as washes, hatching, cross hatching

work on different scales too, do some small ones, and then try a bigger drawing

they want to see variety and know that you can work with a range of different mediums and concepts, so grit your teeth and conquer like the rest of us, it will add depth and skill to your personal work.
